SA Branch - Annual Graduation Luncheon

5 December 2023

1200 for 1230

Naval, Military and Air Force Club

Topic: AUKUS: Capability, Sovereignty, and Regional Security?'

Speaker: Dr Maryanne Kelton

Abstract: At King’s College London, on 31 January 2023, the Australian Foreign Minister argued that “... we are not hostages to history. We decide what we will do with the present. And we decide what we do to help shape the region that we want.” How does the Australian Government’s announcement of AUKUS, the new formal security relationship with the UK and the US, promote regional security? With its twin pillar promises of conventionally armed, nuclear powered submarines and AI, cyber, quantum and undersea technologies, can AUKUS deliver the capability to serve Australian interests, enhance strategic advantages, and shape the Indo-Pacific?

Bio: Dr Maryanne Kelton is a Senior Lecturer in the College of Business, Government and Law at Flinders University. She is a researcher in Australian Foreign Policy, the national security-international political economy nexus, Alliance relations, and the strategic implications of digital technology.

The cost of the luncheon is $80.00(TBC) which includes a main course and dessert. For further information, contact Doug Strain on 0407 200 664 or dougstrainie@gmail.com.
